blog

The Change Designs Blog is a collection of personal stories, real life experiences and insights of consultants. In this blog you will find real life stories depicting magical experiences, and struggles, where the truth is richer, stranger and funnier than any theory or model. We will publish our own stories but we also encourage you to submit your stories too. Email your experiences to blog@changedesigns.net and we will post them - subject to editorial review. If people comment on your story then you can comment back via the blog post. If you've ever wanted to read the diary of a change agent, a consultant, a facilitator or a coach, then you will enjoy reading and contributing to this blog.

Barefoot running week 10. Life gets in the way.

Ruth Tearle - Friday, May 18, 2012

It is much more difficult to start again or to get back on track, than it is to continue. I haven't run for 3 weeks. I hate to admit this in a blog, after my no excuses campaign. But sometimes life gets in the way. Read more

Barefoot running week 6-7. Mastering small transitions

Ruth Tearle - Thursday, April 26, 2012

The hardest part of any change, is managing transitions. I struggle with the transition between sleeping and waking. I have no trouble sleeping, and once I'm up, I am fine for the day. But falling asleep and waking up is difficult. I've also noticed that the most difficult part of running, is not running, but rather it is the transition between sitting and exercising. It is packing my gym bag and grabbing my car keys.  Read more

Change agent as hero. The story behind cultural or transformational change management.

Ruth Tearle - Friday, April 20, 2012

When we are involved in cultural change management, we often get so hung up on terminology, definitions and methodologies that we forget the story that underlies any transformational change. It is the universal story of all heroes.  Read more

Barefoot running - Changing habits. Week 4 & 5

Ruth Tearle - Thursday, April 05, 2012

Managing change is about adopting new habits. This is easy to say and understand, but doing it is difficult. This is because changing a habit often involves winning an internal battle of wills. Read more

Ruth Tearle - Thursday, March 29, 2012

When last in your career, did you 'have a dream?' When last did you feel the magic dust of inspiration spread across a room? Sometimes all it takes to energize a group and solve a difficult problem, is to copy a master.  Read more

Barefoot running. Managing change is an ongoing journey. Week 3.

Ruth Tearle - Friday, March 23, 2012

Sometimes life gets in the way. I went away to a nature reserve from Sunday to Wednesday. While De Hoop Nature Reserve has beaches, sand dunes, lagoons, rare animals and amazing birds, it does not have a treadmill which can be set to a 7% incline. And while the scenery is superb, my barefoot running shoes would have been destroyed on the stony roads within a few minutes.  Read more

Who has inspired you?

Ruth Tearle - Friday, March 23, 2012

I recently participated in a discussion entitled "What is the best advice you ever got?" I started thinking of all the people who had inspired me in my life and my career. Each of them had something to say, that got me thinking differently about problems, challenges and what works in life.  Read more

Barefoot running - a change in paradigm. Week 1.

Ruth Tearle - Friday, March 09, 2012

It is nine months since my knee operation, and my surgeon has given me permission to run again. But, he warns me, I need to do it differently. Having had a similar operation himself, and being a runner, his advice was to buy minimalist barefoot technology running shoes. These shoes he tells me, protect the knee in that most of the force of landing is spread between the toes, achilles and the calves. So my first step is to practice running with these shoes on a slight incline on a treadmill. Once I've mastered 20 minutes, I can then go back to him for the next step. Read more

Ruth Tearle - Monday, March 05, 2012

I get many calls from people saying they want me to help them with "strategic planning." But what do they really want? Read more
